The political image I found to stand out to me was the photograph by Michael wells of hands. The photo is an animal like hand which is being supported by the missionary. In fact the hand is of a small child that is Ugandan suffering from famine. I believe that this photo is represented as a political image because instead being the typical image of a small child in Africa staving, it is a simple photo. This photo says much more about the situation and gets the viewer to pay more attention to it because it is different.

The two key points that I found was the difference of “representation” and “reflection”. Though out history pictures have been made to depict life likeness while others focused on the concept of abstract feelings as love. The paintings by Dutch artist Peter Claez, still life in 1642. Was considered that it was just a mirror representation of the scene but in fact it has a lot of symbolic meaning for Christians with the use of the fish, wine, bread. A painting made by surrealist artist Rene Margritte of a pipe, but under the pipe he wrote “this is not a pipe”. Potentially warning his viewers that it was not “real” pipe but a representation, it was an image of a pipe but because it couldn’t be used it was just a representation.

photojournalism

In photojournalism the ethics the taking photographs are a lot more strict then more other photographic pursuits. This is for the main reason that when images are seen in a News context; the viewer is expecting to see the truth. The slightest change in the photo can change the whole meaning of the photograph. The way the photo is taken angle, shutter, aperture, lighting or even to get the subject to something for a better picture.

Post capture changes such as Photoshop, can add that are needed or subtract from the “mistake” in the photo.

This is really evident in the TIME magazines depiction of O.J. Simpson, making his skin darker tapping into the fear in America -the darker skin more likely to commit crime.
